Behind the Bubbles...

Because if you've come this far, apparently something I did spark interest,
maybe made you laugh, inspired you? I do hope so. So, porque no? Welcome to go on.

When Ophir Bikurim, my first publisher, asked me what to write on the back cover of my book Blowing Bubbles, I wasn't quite sure how to answer.

"What do people usually write?"

"Academic achievements, family, kids, career..."

Well, at the time, I didn't really have any of those. Sure, I had the family I grew up with, but not one I have was created by myself. In any case, those things didn't seem to be what truly mattered about a person. That’s not what defines someone, and it’s not the way to get to know them. So instead, I wrote about love for people, acceptance of others and myself. Caring for the environment is also high on my list of priorities. And writing—writing is a tool that helps me better understand myself and echo my experiences and insights. "Come on, share another story, Wandel!" my friends often urge me.

By the second book, I could have written about the fact that I had already published a book, but I ended up writing about settling into a life of nomadism, partnership in singlehood, and a gypsy making a lentil stew.

By the third book, I had an academic title to add. Not that I wave it around everywhere, but after a few winters packed with skiing, learning German (including alongside people from various Arab countries), and integrating into the Austrian Alps, I completed a bachelor's degree in Energy Management and Sustainability. Student exchanges in Liverpool, work building avalanche fences in polar bear territory, and a Crusader-style Camino (as an atheist) from Tuscany to the Vatican became additional experiences and connections that enriched my life and my books.

When there's a sea nearby, I try to maintain my diving trips and work as an underwater instructor. Spending time in nature and traveling with a tent, portable stove, and hitchhiking is probably my preferred way to travel. Though honestly, I wouldn't turn down cycling trips, road trips, or even boat journeys. Farms, mud, and communes? Count me in!

In music, I've been trying for years to become part of the drumming world. So every now and then, I hit the drum, but my real specialty lies in building wooden cajons. Did I mention editing skiing and diving videos for Hollywood? Famous in the scene, already with dozens of views!

So there's always much more to write on the back cover than we think. And for others too, there's no need to compare. It’s not a competition. I'm just doing what fits me, and in the end, the truly important things fall into place. The important people fall into place. It’s great to get advice, support, and guidance, but in the end, after honest reflection, a zoom-out, or some meditation on a pointy rock, I know what's best for me. And "me" isn't even the point—it's just the foundation to do good for others and the environment. Oh wow... seems like I've started getting into values... well, I'll stop here and leave you to flip ahead to the book intros and various levels of spiciness. Bless us all, and Hamsa on your head!
